Background

Grant dedicated the Schmutz family to his mother’s old Remington typewriter. Taking scans of documents produced with the old manual beast, each character was digitally massaged into something that reminds us of a perfectly broken-in writing machine.

The base weight, Schmutz Cleaned, puts the type back into typewriter. But let’s say you’ve just replaced that old ribbon and the hammers are filled with fresh, dense ink. Schmutz Clogged is the heavy handed companion font to Schmutz Cleaned, bringing another level of interpretation to this familiar typeface. The lightest weights, Schmutz Corroded, is what your correspondence would have looked looked like when you couldn’t afford to replace the ribbon.
