Background
Rongel is a revival in the sense that it adapts a typeface that only existed in a previous and obsolete technology. However, I didn’t try to reproduce or imitate the original model faithfully. Rather I introduced new ideas and corrected some aspects that, obviously due to the conditions of how types were made, are no longer accepted today.
Rongel is an interpretation of the types shown in an eighteenth century Spanish catalogue, Muestras de los Punzones y Matrices de Letra que se funde en el Obrador de la Imprenta Real, Madrid, Ano de 1799, and titled with the name Rongel, whom I suppose, cut them. Another example of these types can be found in Las Eroticas, y Traduccion de Boecio by Villegas and printed by António de Sancha in Madrid, 1774.
Rongel was released in two variants, roman and italic. Both include, old style and lining figures, fraction figures, small caps and many other extra characters. The design of Rongel started in 1999.
