Background

Designed by Herb Lubalin and Tom Carnase in 1970, this typeface was based on Lubalin’s late 1960’s logo and headline typeface for Avant Garde Magazine, which itself was not initially designed to be a full, commercially available, typeface.

The original commercial release only included five roman weights and included one version for headlines and one for body copy. The modern digitized releases do not include the ligatures and alternate characters of the headline version.

Additional weights and styles were added later:
The condensed version was created by Ed Benguiat in 1974.
The oblique version was created by André Gürtler, Erich Gschwind and Christian Mengelt in 1977.

A monospaced version was created by Ned Bunnel in 1983.
