Welcome to Typedia
We’re very pleased to take the wrapper off Typedia, a community website to classify typefaces and educate people about them. We love type, and we have a burning desire to learn as much as possible about typefaces: where they come from, who made them, and why they look the way they do. We want everyone to be able to share in that rich knowledge and enjoy the art and artists of type design.
Think of it as IMDb.com for type, but anyone can contribute. You can list typefaces (as well as foundries and designers), and other members can add to or complete your entries. We’ve also started a section of the site to learn about different terms related to type and the different ways they are classified.
We understand there will be some controversy here and there, issues like the “correct” way to classify typefaces or how we display typefaces (currently using Flash, similar to sIFR). We hope to continue evolving the site to find workable ways to keep everyone happy, including reaching out to foundries to bring them into the fold and show that we aren’t doing anything malicious here, and that we are trying to create a resource for their work to reach even more people. In the meantime, we ask that you consult your font EULAs before uploading any specimens to be sure you have permission to do so.
Over time, We think Typedia could grow into a great educational resource for people to learn about their favorite typefaces and discover new ones. If all of that sounds good to you, Sign Up for an account today and help us make Typedia as good as it can be.

Great news!
We need a “website about fonts“ that does not try to sell fonts at the same time…

The header background needs a little fixing, it’s narrower that than content. :D

Good luck with this.
I write about fonts all the time – with an emphasis on screen readability and suitability for use with @font-face as that evolves over the coming years.
A nice idea and, hopefully, a great resource in the making.

Good work! It would be cool if the Explore / Browse results showed thumbnails for quick blousing… er, I mean browsing.

@ Trent Walton: Yep, all of the browsing improvement are on our to-do list once we squash some lingering bugs. Thanks!

I think this promises to be one of the most useful resources on the internet for seekers of typographical knowledge. Excellent work!

Very promising, great work!
I was wondering why the “similar typeface” section was not editable. I suppose there’s a hell of a algorithm that finds similar entries, but I think sometimes similiar typeface should be added by contributors. Would have more accuracy. Maybe I didn’t see the point, or this is already in the todo list.
Anyway, happy to join, I love it so far…
