Type News: Now in Mono

This week: an old stalwart gets an addition to the family, and some distinctive faces make themselves heard.

In case you missed it, the U.S. midterm elections were this week, and Sam Berlow and others discuss the role of type in the campaign in an article for the New York Times. Berlow was also interviewed on Radio Boston and also offers up his own run-down.

But enough about politics. Let’s get to the new type!

Helvetica Monospaced specimen

If you thought Helvetica wasn’t ubiquitous enough, there’s good news from Linotype, which has released Helvetica Monospaced. (It’s a shame about the low quality of their samples.)

Skyhook Mono specimen

David Waschbüsch has released Skyhook Mono, an intriguing, flexible, and unique monospaced face that has my imagination running.

Piel Script specimen

For something completely different, tattoo your work with Alejandro Paul’s beautiful and gritty new Piel Script, from Sudtipos.

The past rears its head again this week, most notably with the second part of William Berkson’s “Reviving Caslon” is up on I Love Typography. James Mosely discusses the history of the number ten at Ten Downing Street. Dan Nadel has a nice overview of Milton Glaser’s type. And Paul Shaw recaps (and points to video from) “Navigating the Labyrinth: Unimark International and the New York City Subway System.”

If the future is in webfonts, recent statistics from Typekit and Google suggest that tomorrow’s already here. To help you catch up, Per Sandstrm has created a type browser to preview different type on the web. Also useful is the new Type-a-file service from Russ Maschmeyer.

Other great opportunities to learn are coming soon or already happening:

If all this talk of the typeface design program at The Cooper Union has you intrigued, be sure to check out the first part of James Puckett’s diary of his own experience. Here are few items also of interest:

That’s the news for this week. What did we miss? Please let us know in the comments.
